Good weather not withstanding, one of the features that makes Atlanta such an attractive environment in which to live are its trees. Situated at the southern edge of the Appalachian Mountains, Atlanta was carved out of a pine forest that still dominates — and to some extent — dictates the landscape. Who doesn’t love the mature trees that beautify and cool our homes?

But it’s those very trees that all too frequently present real hazards to the health and welfare of the occupants inside our naturally cooled home. The fact of the matter is if you live in Atlanta long enough, you’re going have to deal with trimming or taking down a tree or two — or a dozen.

How to Choose a Tree Removal Service

Sourcing a reputable tree removal service can be intimidating. Basically, you’ve got a couple of choices: The guy who drives through your neighborhood in a beat-up truck and tapes business cards on your mailbox, or a professional operation. Although your gut instinct says the pros are the only way to go, you know you can get a “deal” from beat-up truck guy.

That deal, though, may lead to your undoing. Because if something happens to beat-up truck guy’s crew, there’s nearly a 100 percent chance he’s uninsured — and you’re going to be liable. Your homeowners’ insurance will not cover an uninsured contractor. To eliminate any possibility of turning your world from suburbia to living on the street, go with the pro, but vet him thoroughly.

What you need to know and ask:

• How does the estimator present him- or herself? Are they clean, wearing a company shirt or uniform?
• The estimator should be able to instantly produce copies of liability and workers’ compensation proof of insurance
• The company should be a member of professional arborist organizations, such as the Georgia Arborist Association (www.georgiaarborist.camp8.org), the Tree Care Industry Association (www.treecareindustry.org) and the International Society of Arboriculture (www.isa-arbor.com)
• Is there a certified arborist on staff?
• A written contract should be provided detailing exactly what will be done, including cleanup and disposal. Do not sign anything under the threat of a limited time offer or other high-pressure tactic.
• Is the crew subcontracted or employees of the operation?
• References for jobs within the past 30 days
• Expect to pay for a consultation to treat a struggling tree, but tree removal estimates should be at no charge
